Art History
Speeches
Virginia Cornell's interest in art history and education have resulted in
frequent lectures at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, universities, public
schools and cruise ships where she helps passengers to a better
understanding of ports they will visit. She has lectured on:
- Greek and Roman art and mythology
- the Chinese terra cotta warriors of Xian
- Maya art and archaeology
- the Tale of Genjii in Japanese art
- vulcanology and Mediterranean art (Thera and Pompeii)
- the original Olympics
- the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
- as well as the ultra modern art to be found at museums in Venice, Nice,
Barcelona and Mexico.
A Ph.D. scholar of Renaissance English literature, she delights in connecting
audiences with the stories of art. "I am not an art expert, but I am an
art educator," says Cornell. "When I learn about something wonderful,
I can hardly wait to tell other people about it in hopes they will love
it as much as I do."
What they are saying:
"What a pleasure it was to have someone in our age group bring some
laughter and humor into our lives when bringing to our attention everyday
occurrences and events! So many attendees at the Bank of America Retirees
luncheon came up to me afterward to tell me how much they enjoyed your
program."
Walter Zeni, Program Chairman
"I received many favorable comments from our members after the meeting.
Your talk definitely enjoyed more audience response than we normally
experience."
Terry Straehley, Rotary Club of Santa Barbara North
"A big 'thank you' for a fun afternoon. You were a success and so were we,
because of you."
Flora Schneider, program chair, Installation Luncheon, City Chapter,
Brandeis Alumna, Los Angeles
"Your delightful talk last Sunday was very much enjoyed by us all. So many
of us could relate to similar experiences in our own lives."
Phyllis Kirkpatrick, Friends of the Goleta Library "Your
practical approach to publishing was enlivened by your witty presentation.
Members reported that they got many ideas from your sessions on Writing the
Personal Memoir and Self-Publishing at the Washington Independent Writers
Spring Conference."

Laugh and Learn with Virginia Cornell
Virginia Cornell's most popular speech is her unbeat, hilarious, inspiring
talk which is largely derived from her book The Latest Wrinkle and Other
Signs of Aging. "When people volunteer to speak to seniors, they
usually want to talk about their health or money (or lack thereof). But I think
everybody deserves a good belly laugh and a positive take on getting older
and better." She also speaks about writing, self-publishing, and
the personal memoir.
